FILLINGS & EXTRACTIONS

FILLINGS

Dental fillings are used to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay or fractures. The fillings are made from a variety of materials, including gold, silver, and resin composite. In the past, dentists used amalgam, which is a mixture of metals. However, this type of filling is not used as often because it does not bond to teeth like the newer white fillings do. Dr. Kisling will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then clean the area before placing the filling. Once the filling is in place, it will be polished so that it blends in with the natural tooth. Fillings can last for many years, but they may eventually need to be replaced due to wear and tear.

EXTRACTIONS

Dental extractions are a common dental procedure that involves removing one or more teeth from the mouth. There are a variety of reasons why someone might need a dental extraction, including tooth decay, gum disease, and overcrowding or tooth fracture. In some cases, extractions may also be recommended for preventative purposes, such as if a tooth is at risk of becoming impacted. Sometimes, Dr. Kisling will recommend placing a bone graft in conjunction with extraction to help preserve the volume of jaw bone if necessary for future treatment of the area. The extraction process typically begins with numbing the area around the tooth. Once the patient is comfortable, Dr. Kisling will use special instruments to loosen the tooth and then remove it from the socket. Although extractions can be slightly uncomfortable, most patients report feeling little to no pain during the procedure. Recovery from an extraction is generally quick and straightforward, although it is important to take care of the extraction site as directed to avoid developing an infection.
